Former Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, has explained why his party has declined coalition talks with other political groups.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday during the 2025 Christmas Marathon and Health Walk in Akure, Adebayo emphasized that opposition to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu alone does not justify forming alliances with other politicians.
He argued that many of those advocating for a coalition lack credibility, coherent ideology, and the moral authority necessary to deliver meaningful change to Nigerians.
“We are exploring coalition opportunities, but any collaboration must serve a genuine purpose for ordinary Nigerians,” Adebayo said. “The fact that I don’t like President Tinubu is not a reason to accept the same negative tendencies from others. That is why we carefully vet anyone who seeks to join us. Many were turned away because their intentions contradicted our values.”
Adebayo further criticized some opposition figures for attempting to capitalize on public dissatisfaction with the government, rather than offering constructive alternatives.
“It’s not just about opposing the current administration; it’s about presenting a better option. You can’t have someone worse taking over under the guise of change,” he said. Using a metaphor, he added: “If you ask a chicken how to cook it—one says roast, another says fry, another says parboil—the chicken cannot make sense of any of them. Similarly, people cannot be asked to choose between leaders with conflicting, self-serving agendas.”
The SDP leader insisted that his party’s priority is to ensure any alliances are principled and focused on genuine governance reform, rather than riding a wave of public anger or political opportunism.
