The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, of acting out of fear over a possible loss of influence with President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement released on Monday, the party’s spokesperson, Ini Ememobong, claimed that Wike’s recent public comments reveal growing anxiety about his diminishing political control in Rivers State.
Ememobong made the remarks while reacting to statements by the former Rivers State governor during his end-of-year media briefing, describing Wike’s tone as defensive and desperate for presidential validation.
According to the PDP, Wike’s comments showed “clear signs of concern” over waning relevance, reduced dominance in Rivers politics, and dissatisfaction with the firm stance of the party’s national leadership.
The party further referenced the recent political shift involving Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who reportedly defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier this month — a move the FCT minister was said to have strongly opposed.
The PDP noted that Wike’s resistance to Fubara’s defection stemmed from the collapse of the political structure he once controlled in Rivers State, which has now aligned with the APC.
Ememobong criticized Wike for repeatedly declaring loyalty to President Tinubu while insisting he remains a PDP member, describing such conduct as blatant anti-party behavior.
He added that Wike’s actions justified the disciplinary measures previously taken against him, stressing that his political conduct contradicts democratic principles and party allegiance.
The party also accused the minister of consistently fueling internal disputes within the PDP to serve personal ambitions.
“From the moment he became governor in 2015, Wike has remained a persistent source of internal instability within the PDP,” Ememobong stated.
He further alleged that Wike played significant roles in several leadership crises within the party, including the removal of Ali Modu Sheriff as national chairman, later turning against Uche Secondus after supporting his rise, and championing Iyorchia Ayu’s emergence before leading calls for his removal.
According to the PDP, Wike’s political style thrives on confrontation and calculated controversy, using conflict as a tool to maintain relevance.
“The long-term impact of such behavior has been the intentional sowing of division and tension, often used as leverage to pursue narrow political interests,” the statement concluded.
