1. Nationwide Blackout Hits Nigeria as National Grid Collapses
Nigeria experienced a major electricity blackout on Monday after the national grid collapsed, forcing the power sector to switch to emergency supply and leaving most of the country without electricity.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) reported a sharp drop in power generation, falling from 2,052.37 megawatts at 2:00 pm to just 139.92 megawatts by 3:00 pm, severely affecting distribution across the country.
Of the 11 electricity distribution companies, only three received power during the blackout:
- Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC): 80 MW
- Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC): 20 MW
- Benin Distribution Company (Benin DisCo): 20 MW
The remaining distribution companies—including Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Yola—received no electricity.
Independent monitoring confirmed that as of 3:50 pm, only IBEDC, AEDC, and Benin DisCo had power, while the other regions remained in total blackout.
2 .Peter Obi: No One in ADC Is Stepping Down for Me
Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has clarified that within the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, no member is stepping down in his favour.
Obi made this statement during an 𝕏 Space session on Sunday night, affirming that the coalition is focused on collaboration rather than individual concessions.
The former Anambra State Governor also stressed that he does not need to formally join the ADC, noting that he has been affiliated with the party since its inception.
He further emphasized his continued respect for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, highlighting his commitment to maintaining political decorum.
3 .NNPP Urges Gov. Yusuf to Reject APC Defection
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has appealed to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf not to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), which it claims is largely rejected by the public.
During a press briefing in Kano on Monday, NNPP State Chairman Suleiman Dungurawa dismissed rumors that certain party members were attempting to drive a wedge between Yusuf and NNPP national leader Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Dungurawa emphasized that Kwankwaso does not support any ongoing political maneuvers in the state and urged residents to remain calm and continue their daily activities.
He also warned party members against signing any documents circulated by individuals promoting Yusuf’s alleged defection to the APC.
4 .Guardiola Credits Mindset Shift for Manchester City’s Return to Form
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has attributed the team’s resurgence this season to a renewed mindset and restored energy within the squad.
Speaking ahead of City’s New Year’s Day match against Sunderland, Guardiola reflected on the previous season, stressing that managers cannot ignore underlying issues when performance dips.
Guardiola noted that the squad’s pre-season trip played a pivotal role in rebuilding belief and unity among the players, helping the team regain momentum regardless of prior results on the pitch.
5 .Ex-Wife Alleges Chris Okafor Slept With Family Members
Bessem Agnes Okafor, ex-wife of Pastor Chris Okafor, has accused the clergyman of engaging in relationships with multiple women, including family members, during their marriage.
Speaking during a YouTube Livestream with Aunty Adunni, Bessem stated that she left Okafor 14 years ago due to his misconduct, which allegedly included impregnating church members’ wives, deacons’ wives, and choir members.
She further suggested that church members conduct DNA tests on their children to confirm her claims.
6 .President Tinubu Approves Cancellation of $1.42B and ₦5.57T NNPC Debt to Federation Account
President Bola Tinubu has officially cleared a significant portion of debts owed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to the Federation Account.
According to a recent report by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), the cancellation amounts to approximately $1.42 billion and ₦5.57 trillion.
The details were disclosed in the NUPRC’s report titled “Report of October 2025 Revenue Collection Presented at the Federation Account Allocation Committee Meeting Held on 18th November 2025.”
The debt write-off covers obligations accumulated up to December 31, 2024, while current liabilities from 2025 operations continue to be monitored. The commission confirmed that all accounting entries reflecting this debt cancellation have been properly recorded in the Federation Account.
The NUPRC noted that the Presidential approval followed recommendations from the Stakeholder Alignment Committee on the Reconciliation of Indebtedness between NNPCL and the Federation, which reviewed all royalty and lifting-related liabilities through the end of 2024.
7 . Wike Denies Claim That He Promised To Hold PDP for Tinubu
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has refuted claims by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde that he promised to suppress the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in favour of President Bola Tinubu for the 2027 elections.
Speaking during a media briefing on Monday, Wike described Makinde’s statement as “blatantly false,” insisting no such discussion ever occurred with President Tinubu.
Makinde had previously said during a press conference in Ibadan that Wike allegedly declared he would hold the PDP for Tinubu and that he (Makinde) was surprised by this and would not participate in such plans.
Wike countered the allegation, stating that Makinde has never approached him directly to make such claims and that the report misrepresents reality.
8 . Wike Questions PDP’s Chances in 2027 Presidential Election
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has expressed skepticism over the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) ability to win the presidency in 2027.
Speaking during his end-of-year media briefing, Wike cited poor leadership as the key reason for the party’s dwindling prospects. He noted that PDP currently lacks focus and commitment, but stressed that with the right leadership, the party could potentially reclaim power in 2031.
9 . Anthony Joshua Hospitalised After Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Crash
Former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been hospitalised following a serious accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, which claimed the lives of two people.
The crash occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on Monday in the Makun area when Joshua’s SUV collided with a stationary truck. The 36-year-old boxer, travelling in a convoy, sustained minor injuries and was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Social media footage showed Joshua shirtless and visibly shaken inside the heavily damaged Lexus SUV, surrounded by shattered glass. In another clip, he was seen sitting in an emergency vehicle while speaking with officials at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that five men were involved in the incident. Joshua was seated behind the driver, accompanied by a passenger, while his security detail followed in a separate vehicle.
10 . Wunmi Denies Giving Birth After Mohbad’s Passing
Wunmi, widow of the late Nigerian singer Mohbad, has addressed online rumours claiming she recently gave birth to a baby girl following the singer’s death in September 2023.
The story circulated after photos allegedly showing Wunmi with a newborn went viral on social media.
Through her Snapchat story, Wunmi clarified that she did not welcome a second child and emphasized that the images are misleading. She urged the public to stop sharing unverified information.
