World-renowned heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious road accident on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Makun, Ogun State.
Eyewitnesses reported that the crash occurred on a busy section of the highway when Joshua’s vehicle collided with another car. The cause of the collision is currently under investigation by local authorities.
One witness, who participated in the rescue efforts and spoke to Punch, revealed that Joshua sustained only minor injuries. Tragically, two people lost their lives at the scene.
As of now, neither Anthony Joshua’s team nor his family has issued an official statement regarding the accident.
The incident comes shortly after Joshua made headlines for a very different reason. Just days ago, the Nigerian-born former world heavyweight champion faced American social media personality and boxer Jake Paul in a widely publicized bout.
Pam Stepnick, Jake Paul’s mother, disclosed on Friday, December 26, that Joshua personally approached her to apologise after her son suffered a broken jaw during the fight. Speaking on the Impaulsive podcast, Stepnick commended Joshua’s respectful and empathetic behaviour. She described how he navigated through the crowd to speak with her directly.
“He worked his way through the crowd and came up to me and said, ‘Mum, just know, it’s just boxing. It is just the fight game,’” she said.
Stepnick, however, expressed frustration with Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, accusing him of showing little concern for her son’s condition.
“I want to get in the ring and punch Eddie Hearn because I don’t like his smug face. Jake is struggling and he’s sitting over there smiling, like he’s the cat that swallowed the canary,” she said.
“That’s sickening to me, that’s sick. I don’t like it. Even Anthony Joshua had some class and apologised to me.”
