Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has dismissed concerns over pressure heading into the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) knockout stage, following Nigeria’s commanding 3-1 win over Uganda on Tuesday in Fez.
The victory capped a flawless Group C campaign for Nigeria, who finished top of the table with nine points from three matches. Attention now turns to the round of 16 on Monday, where the Super Eagles will face one of Ivory Coast, Cameroon, or Mozambique.
Speaking after the match, Chelle emphasised that the expectations surrounding the knockout rounds are familiar territory. “The round of 16 is a lot of pressure, for sure, but I am fascinated by that. Since I arrived, I have had a lot of pressure and I feel good,” he said.
The coach also highlighted the positive environment in Fez, praising the calm town, the facilities, and the warm reception from locals. “I am very happy to stay in Fès because the town is good and calm. The people are very nice to us. We are focused and we have our base. We can do a lot of training sessions,” he noted.
On the pitch, Nigeria took the lead in the 28th minute when Paul Onuachu converted a precise assist from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. Uganda’s challenge was further weakened early in the second half when Salim Magoola was sent off for handball.
The Super Eagles capitalized on their numerical advantage as Raphael Onyedika scored twice in quick succession in the 62nd and 67th minutes, both goals crafted by Samuel Chukwueze. Uganda briefly reduced the deficit through Rogers Mato in the 75th minute, but Nigeria maintained control to finish the game 3-1 and end the Cranes’ tournament.
Chelle praised his rotated line-up, noting the strong performance of players given rare starting opportunities. “The group gave a good answer today because the players who did not start the previous games started today and they showed something. They scored three goals and I am very happy about that,” he said.
The coach also acknowledged the challenges of squad selection as competition for places intensifies. “Now I have a little pain in my head because I have to make a lot of choices, because everybody can play in this team, and that is perfect for me,” Chelle added.
Despite the perfect group record, Chelle stressed that higher standards will be required in the knockout rounds. “I am happy about the victory, but we have to improve again. If we want to be ambitious, we have to improve again,” he said.
Nigeria now aims to carry their momentum into the round of 16 as they pursue continental glory at AFCON 2025.
