President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that Nigeria is entering a new and more resilient phase of economic growth in 2026, following measurable progress recorded in 2025 through wide-ranging fiscal, monetary, and structural reforms.

In his New Year address obtained by Naija News, the President stated that despite global economic pressures, Nigeria ended 2025 on a solid footing. He emphasized that the tough policy decisions taken by his administration are now yielding tangible benefits for both the economy and everyday citizens.

Economic Progress and Projections for 2026

According to Tinubu, Nigeria achieved steady Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth across all quarters of 2025, with annual growth expected to exceed four percent. He noted improvements in trade balances, greater exchange-rate stability, and a gradual drop in inflation, which has fallen below 15 percent in line with government projections.

He further revealed that the Nigerian Stock Exchange delivered one of its strongest performances globally in 2025, recording a 48.12 percent gain and sustaining the market rally that began in the latter half of 2023.

The President also disclosed that Nigeria’s foreign reserves reached $45.4 billion as of December 29, 2025, strengthening the naira’s resilience against external shocks and positioning the economy for further gains in 2026.

On investment inflows, Tinubu said foreign direct investment surged to $720 million in the third quarter of 2025, up from $90 million in the preceding quarter. He attributed this sharp increase to renewed investor confidence, adding that international credit rating agencies such as Moody’s, Fitch, and Standard & Poor’s have continued to endorse Nigeria’s economic trajectory.

Budget Discipline and Tax Reforms

Tinubu referenced the submission of the 2026 Appropriation Bill to the National Assembly, reiterating his administration’s commitment to fiscal discipline as a foundation for sustainable growth.

He explained that easing inflation and interest rates would free up more resources for critical investments in infrastructure and human capital. Addressing concerns around multiple taxation, the President praised states that have embraced harmonized tax frameworks aligned with national reforms, aimed at reducing excessive levies on individuals and businesses.

He described 2026 as a pivotal year for tax reform implementation, with the goal of creating a fair, competitive, and sustainable revenue system to support national development.

Security and Stability

Acknowledging ongoing security challenges, Tinubu stressed that economic advancement must be matched with peace and stability.

He disclosed that Nigerian security forces, in collaboration with international partners including the United States, carried out targeted operations against terrorist elements in parts of the Northwest on December 24. He added that sustained military efforts are ongoing across the Northwest and Northeast.

The President reaffirmed plans to deepen cooperation with regional and global allies in 2026, while supporting decentralized policing and the deployment of well-regulated forest guards to combat terrorism, banditry, and other criminal activities.

Inclusive Growth and Social Impact

Tinubu announced that the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme would be fast-tracked in 2026, with plans to empower at least 1,000 individuals in each of Nigeria’s 8,809 wards—bringing approximately 10 million citizens into productive economic engagement.

He said key sectors such as agriculture, trade, food processing, and mining would receive priority to boost local economies. Continued investments are also planned for roads, power, ports, railways, airports, pipelines, healthcare, education, and agriculture. He assured Nigerians that all ongoing infrastructure projects would proceed without interruption.

Appeal for National Unity

The President called on Nigerians to strengthen unity, patriotism, and collective responsibility, stressing that national progress in 2026 depends on shared commitment and cooperation.

He concluded by wishing citizens a peaceful, productive, and prosperous New Year, offering prayers for lasting peace, security, and protection for the nation and its armed forces.
