Former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has been released from medical care after doctors confirmed he is stable enough to continue recuperating outside the hospital, following the road accident that occurred on December 29, 2025.
In a joint communication issued on Wednesday, the Lagos and Ogun State governments described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy, extending their sympathies to the families of the two young men who lost their lives, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami.
Medical officials cleared Joshua for discharge late Wednesday afternoon after assessing his condition and determining that he was clinically fit to proceed with recovery from home.
Witnesses noted that the boxer appeared deeply emotional as he departed the hospital, reportedly weighed down by grief over the deaths of the two victims, said to have been close associates.
Later that same day, Joshua—accompanied by his mother—was said to have visited a Lagos funeral facility to honor the deceased, as arrangements were being finalized for the transfer of their remains that evening.
The statement, jointly endorsed by Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, and Ogun State Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, also conveyed that Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Dapo Abiodun acknowledged and appreciated the widespread public concern and compassion shown after the accident.
They further thanked President Bola Tinubu for what they described as his supportive, fatherly role during the difficult period, while also praising the medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their professionalism and quality treatment provided to Joshua and other injured individuals.
Both state governments concluded by offering prayers for the peaceful repose of the deceased and asking for strength and comfort for their grieving families as they cope with the loss.
