The Rivers Ijaw Peoples Congress has formally withdrawn its backing from Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, pledging support instead to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Senator George Sekibo, Chairman of the Congress, made the announcement during Wike’s appreciation visit to Okrika Local Government Area on Saturday. He explained that the decision reflects Wike’s sustained commitment and contributions to the Ijaw people across Rivers State, noting that the group wished to align with a leader who has consistently championed their political and developmental interests.
Sekibo described the political rift between Fubara and Wike as unfortunate but emphasized that the Ijaw community should not be labeled as ungrateful. He recalled Wike’s pivotal role in supporting Fubara, an Ijaw son, to the governorship. “We are a people who value loyalty and gratitude. That is why we made the decision to step away and align with you. You have done a great deal for the Ijaw people in Rivers State, and we are prepared to stand with you and follow your direction,” he said.
Adding his voice, Akuro Tobin, Chairman of Okrika Local Government Council, described Wike as a political mentor. He credited the minister with facilitating opportunities for many local indigenes to hold elective and appointed positions, reinforcing Wike’s influence in the region.
Tobin further assured Wike that the people of Okrika—including youths, women, and community leaders—remain firmly supportive of him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Responding, Wike expressed gratitude for the show of loyalty and solidarity. He praised President Tinubu as a leader who fulfills his commitments and encouraged the Okrika community to continue supporting leaders known for integrity and dependable leadership.
