Presidency Takes Swipe at Peter Obi Over Switch to ADC

The Federal Presidency has responded to Peter Obi’s defection from the Labour Party (LP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), dismissing it as largely inconsequential in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Media and Public Communication, issued the critique in a statement titled: “Imprisoned by Ambition: Welcome to 2027 — Peter Obi’s Reckless Misreading of Politics and Power.” He described the move as failing to generate meaningful excitement or momentum, noting that public reaction has been largely indifferent.

According to Dare, Obi’s switch to the ADC follows a predictable trajectory that Nigerians have observed repeatedly in the nation’s political history, and does not represent a bold or transformative political vision. He characterized Obi’s messaging as repetitive and tiresome, suggesting the move reflects the final stage of a strategy that has already run its course.

The presidential aide further argued that Obi has used the defection to relaunch familiar criticisms of President Tinubu. Dare insisted that such attacks carry little political weight, emphasizing that Tinubu’s experience, leadership record, and historical significance far surpass Obi’s influence.

Dare highlighted that President Tinubu governs through deliberate policy and strategic decision-making, rather than emotional appeals, media theatrics, or populist rhetoric. He added that Obi’s statements suggest an inflated perception of his own political relevance.

Finally, Dare contended that Obi’s presidential ambitions lack the broad-based democratic support and nationwide coalition needed to navigate Nigeria’s complex political and cultural dynamics, implying that the defection will have minimal impact on the 2027 electoral contest.
