Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s anticipated defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been delayed once more, fueling speculation across the state’s political landscape.
A close source to the governor revealed that the defection initially scheduled for Monday, January 5, 2026, has now been rescheduled for Monday, January 12, 2026. The delay follows recent consultations and strategic considerations by Yusuf and his political team.
The governor reportedly met with Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja on Friday and requested additional time to engage further with state lawmakers and key stakeholders. These consultations are aimed at ensuring full alignment before publicly formalizing the move to the APC.
Kano State, recognized as a pivotal hub in northern Nigerian politics, has been buzzing with speculation about Yusuf’s potential exit from the NNPP. The governor’s decision has drawn attention not only from party members but also from political analysts and local media.
Amid the political chatter, the NNPP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, addressed growing concerns about defections, particularly among members of the influential Kwankwasiyya movement. In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Johnson acknowledged internal challenges within the party, especially in Kano State.
However, Johnson stressed that Governor Yusuf has yet to formally notify either the NNPP’s National Working Committee (NWC) or the National Executive Committee (NEC) of any intention to leave. He also dismissed reports suggesting that former presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso had approved a mass movement of Yusuf’s supporters to the APC, describing such claims as baseless.
