The political landscape in southern Nigeria is undergoing significant changes following Peter Obi’s formal defection from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Reports indicate that at least eight federal lawmakers are poised to follow his lead.
Obi, who previously served as Governor of Anambra State, officially joined the ADC during a ceremony in Enugu on Wednesday. Speaking at the event, he called on Nigerians and opposition leaders to unite under a broad coalition to tackle persistent national challenges such as poverty, disunity, and democratic erosion.
Addressing his decision to leave the Labour Party, Obi emphasised that patriotism and the national interest guided his move. “This decision is driven solely by the national good. I now respectfully urge my political associates, the Obidient Movement, and opposition leaders nationwide to join this broad coalition under the African Democratic Congress. History will not forgive silence in times of national crisis,” he stated.
The event drew several political heavyweights, highlighting the gravity of Obi’s shift. Notable attendees included Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, and Gilbert Nnaji, as well as High Chief Ben Obi, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, Prof. Pat Utomi, Prof. Osita Ogbu, and Chief Ralph Nwosu.
According to Sunday Punch, the eight federal lawmakers expected to follow Obi include three senators and five members of the House of Representatives from Anambra State who have exited the Labour Party.
The House of Representatives members preparing to align with Obi are Afamefuna Ogene (Ogbaru Federal Constituency), Oby Orogbu (Awka North/Awka South), Harris Okonkwo (Idemili North/Idemili South), Emeka Godwin (Onitsha North/Onitsha South), and George Ozodinobi (Dunukofia/Njikoka/Anaocha). Their defections are yet to be formally announced on the floor of the National Assembly.
Commenting on the development, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi told Sunday Punch that Obi’s entry had already injected new energy into the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Obi’s defection has significantly strengthened the ADC. We expect more quality politicians to follow suit. Discussions are ongoing with other lawmakers and political figures, and the engagement has been positive. More alignments are anticipated in the coming weeks,” Abdullahi said.
