The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has called on former Senate President Bukola Saraki to move away from what it describes as secretive political dealings with the party at the national level and formally join the APC within the state.
Prince Sunday Fagbemi, the Kwara APC Chairman, made the remarks while addressing claims by Prof. Abubakar Sulyman, Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), that Saraki maintains close connections with APC leadership in Abuja. Fagbemi dismissed these alleged manoeuvres as insignificant and consistent with Saraki’s history of self-serving politics.
Highlighting the impact of Saraki’s political strategies, Fagbemi noted that his leadership weakened the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara, prompting several former loyalists to defect to the APC and the African Democratic Congress (ADC). However, the APC deliberately avoided amplifying the issue, seeing it as no real threat to its dominance in the state.
“We do not give unnecessary attention to such matters because, judging by Dr Bukola Saraki’s antecedents, this is clearly a non-issue,” Fagbemi stated.
Call to Act Transparently
The APC chairman urged Saraki to demonstrate political sincerity by officially joining the party in Kwara State and submitting to the leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, rather than maintaining what he described as an opaque alliance from Abuja.
“If he truly has the courage, let him join our party here in Kwara State under our leader and hardworking governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, instead of secretly associating with the APC at the national level,” Fagbemi said.
He further argued that Saraki no longer wields substantial political influence in the state, noting the APC’s successive electoral victories over the PDP. “Many of his supporters are already with us, while others have moved to the ADC. So what exactly is left?” Fagbemi questioned.
Criticizing Saraki’s political consistency, Fagbemi described his recent manoeuvres as survival tactics following the loss of control over state resources and power. “There is no longer access to state government resources, so he is simply trying to stay politically relevant by any means possible,” he alleged.
While acknowledging Saraki’s right to personal political choices, Fagbemi emphasized the need for transparency and accountability. “If he believes in what he is doing, let him come out openly, defect to the APC in Kwara State, and operate within the party’s structure,” he concluded.
