Abdulkareem Explains Why Peter Obi Is Pursuing ADC Presidential Ticket

Ibrahim Abdulkareem, Director-General of Big TENT Nigeria, has offered insights into the motivations behind former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s pursuit of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket for the 2027 elections.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Wednesday, Abdulkareem emphasized that Obi’s decision is not driven by personal entitlement or ambition, but rather by a vision for systemic reform and national cohesion. “Peter Obi didn’t suddenly appear in the ADC. He has been involved from the beginning, and he made that very clear to anyone willing to listen,” Abdulkareem explained.

He elaborated that Obi’s participation in the ADC coalition was contingent on the alliance being more than just a vehicle for power. “He said he would join the coalition if it was aimed at creating a structure that truly serves Nigeria, because Nigerians have been yearning for sincere and effective leadership,” Abdulkareem stated.

Abdulkareem also highlighted Obi’s consultative approach with his supporters, the Obidients, prior to any formal engagement with the ADC. This level of grassroots discussion, he noted, is unusual in Nigerian politics. “Unlike others, including President Bola Tinubu, he held discussions with his base before declaring his intentions. There is no meeting or forum where Peter Obi is demanding the ADC ticket as a birthright or special favour,” he said.

The focus, according to Abdulkareem, remains on the wider goal of rebuilding governance and providing young Nigerians with hope and effective leadership. Obi’s candidacy, he emphasized, is anchored in his track record, commitment to unity, and responsiveness to citizen expectations rather than mere political positioning.

Analysis and Commentary

Abdulkareem’s account underscores the strategic dimension of Obi’s political moves. Unlike traditional power plays, Obi appears to be prioritizing coalition-building and principled participation, signaling a different approach to opposition politics in Nigeria.

This methodology contrasts with more transactional political behavior seen in some quarters, suggesting that Obi aims to leverage his popularity and organizational influence for substantive reforms rather than symbolic victories. Political observers argue that such an approach could strengthen both the ADC’s legitimacy and Obi’s credibility as a candidate capable of bridging divides in the country.

By emphasizing unity, consultation, and system-focused objectives, Obi is positioning himself not just as a contender but as a leader aligned with citizen-driven priorities—a factor that may resonate strongly with younger voters ahead of 2027.
