Contrary to swirling political rumors, Paul Ibe, Media Adviser to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has stated that neither Atiku nor Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has engaged in talks about surrendering or negotiating the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket for the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Wednesday, Ibe stressed that the speculation circulating in some quarters is unfounded. “As I mentioned earlier, raising such an issue now is simply putting the cart before the horse. There has been no discussion between Obi and Atiku about the ADC ticket,” he clarified.
Ibe explained that both leaders are concentrating their efforts on consolidating a robust and credible political platform capable of effectively challenging the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming general elections. He emphasized that any political ambition without a strong and functional base would be doomed to fail. “If the ADC platform is not strong and functional, then their aspirations will collapse. Their priority is strengthening the platform. Anything else is a distraction being pushed by the Tinubu-led administration,” he added.
While opposition maneuvering heats up ahead of 2027, Ibe’s comments serve to counter narratives suggesting a secret compromise between the former vice president and Obi. Sources familiar with discussions among opposition leaders indicated that high-level consultations are ongoing between the ADC, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and other opposition figures to explore coalition strategies.
According to a source speaking to Vanguard, “Talks are ongoing. Very soon, the outcomes will start to take shape. I won’t pre-empt the process.” These dialogues are part of broader attempts to unify opposition forces, though no formal agreements or decisions have yet been reached.
Additionally, Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC National Publicity Secretary, dismissed claims of a coordinated recruitment effort involving both Obi and Atiku into a single opposition alliance, describing the rumors as speculative and premature.
Commentary and Analysis
The clarification from Paul Ibe underscores a recurring pattern in Nigerian politics: media speculation and public rumors often precede any concrete political action. Opposition leaders, particularly ahead of major elections like 2027, are frequently the subject of narratives suggesting backroom deals or ticket negotiations. However, Ibe’s statements indicate a disciplined focus on platform-building rather than transactional politicking.
This approach could signal a strategic move to reassure supporters and maintain party integrity within the ADC, as well as highlight the challenges of coalition-building in a fragmented opposition landscape. Analysts suggest that ensuring a strong political foundation may prove more critical than any individual negotiation in determining electoral success.
