‘Everyone Knows I Don’t Like Talking Too Much’ — Gov. Yusuf Speaks Amid Plans to Defect to APC

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, appears undeterred by the ongoing speculation surrounding his expected defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), reportedly slated for January 12, 2026. While political analysts view the move as a strategic alignment with the federal government, members of his current party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), see it as a potential breach of loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya movement led by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

In a video statement shared with Daily Post, Governor Yusuf addressed supporters, stressing his preference for action over rhetoric. “I have never responded to the discussions surrounding this matter because I don’t believe in too much talk,” he said, underscoring his focus on practical results rather than public debates.

He reinforced this philosophy by quoting a well-known Hausa singer: “What began as something small has now been amplified. As everyone knows, I am not a man of long speeches.” Yusuf explained that his priority is delivering tangible benefits to his constituents rather than engaging in unnecessary discussions. “I’m a man of action — action that benefits my people. That is what guides me, not unnecessary talk,” he added.

Meanwhile, the NNPP has officially lifted the indefinite suspension imposed on Yusuf in 2025, following an internal investigation into disputes allegedly connected to Kwankwaso loyalists. The decision was formalized in a statement signed by the NNPP National Chairman, Dr. Agbo Gilbert Major.

The party disclosed that the National Working Committee, in consultation with the founder and the Board of Trustees, reviewed the investigative findings before making the final determination. The outcome was announced during an emergency meeting held at the NNPP headquarters in Abuja, signaling a reconciliation with the governor despite the looming defection.

Commentary and Analysis

Governor Yusuf’s approach reflects a broader trend in Nigerian politics, where strategic party shifts are often met with polarized reactions. While some view defections as pragmatic moves for access to federal resources, others see them as betrayals of political ideology or loyalty. Yusuf’s emphasis on action over discourse may resonate with constituents who prioritize results over partisan loyalty, but it also highlights the ongoing tension between personal political strategy and party expectations.

The NNPP’s decision to reinstate Yusuf signals a willingness to manage internal conflicts pragmatically, perhaps to maintain influence in Kano despite potential losses to the APC. This development underscores the delicate balancing act Nigerian politicians face when navigating party dynamics, public perception, and the pursuit of political advantage.
