Buratai Sues Retired General for ₦1 Billion Over Terrorism Allegations

Nigeria’s former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai (retd.), has initiated legal action against fellow retired officer Major General Danjuma Hamisu Ali-Keffi, accusing him of making serious claims that allegedly harmed his reputation. The dispute, now before the Kaduna State High Court, stems from public remarks that Buratai insists are untrue and damaging.

Filed in early January 2026, the lawsuit centres on accusations that linked Buratai to terrorism-related activities, including claims suggesting he had associations with individuals connected to Boko Haram and may have been involved in shielding or aiding suspects. Through his legal representatives, A.I. Aliyu and A.M. Hassan of Law Plus Consult, Buratai is asking the court to formally declare the statements defamatory and malicious.

According to court documents, the contested remarks were reportedly shared through interviews granted by Ali-Keffi in 2025. These statements later spread across multiple digital channels such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and X (formerly Twitter), as well as online media outlets. The wide circulation, Buratai argues, amplified the harm caused and gave the allegations both national and international reach.

Buratai has strongly rejected the accusations, stressing that he has never faced investigation, indictment, or conviction in relation to terrorism or financial support for terrorist groups. He maintains that the claims created a false impression of him as someone disloyal to the country and complicit in acts that threaten national security.

The retired general also pointed out what he described as inconsistencies in Ali-Keffi’s public remarks. In particular, he noted that despite making allegations, the defendant reportedly acknowledged there had been no official findings linking Buratai to terrorism offences. This contradiction, according to Buratai, reinforces his claim that the statements were reckless and unfounded.

As part of his legal demands, Buratai is seeking financial compensation amounting to ₦1 billion. He argues that the gravity of terrorism-related accusations—especially coming from a senior military colleague—has significantly damaged his standing and credibility. Beyond monetary damages, he is also requesting a permanent court order preventing Ali-Keffi from repeating the statements in any form.

Another key component of the lawsuit is Buratai’s demand for a full retraction and public apology. He wants the apology published prominently on the same platforms where the allegations appeared, including major national newspapers and online outlets. His legal team insists the corrective statement must receive equal visibility to address the reputational harm.

The suit further calls on the court to compel Ali-Keffi to cover all legal expenses connected to the case. In addition, the defendant has been instructed to respond within 21 days of receiving the court summons. Failure to do so could allow the proceedings to continue without his formal defence.

As of now, the court has not announced a hearing date, and Ali-Keffi has yet to submit an official reply.

Commentary and Legal Perspective

This case highlights the serious consequences of public allegations, especially when they involve sensitive national security issues. Claims related to terrorism carry enormous weight, and when made without official backing, they can permanently damage reputations and careers.

Buratai’s decision to pursue legal action suggests a determination to clear his name through formal judicial channels rather than public debate. It also reflects the importance of reputation within military and national security circles, where credibility is closely tied to trust and professional legacy.

The outcome of the lawsuit could set an important precedent. If the court rules in Buratai’s favour, it may reinforce the legal risks associated with making unverified allegations in public forums. On the other hand, the case also underscores how internal disagreements among high-ranking military figures can spill into public view, drawing attention to accountability and transparency.

Ultimately, the court’s judgment will play a decisive role in determining whether the claims amount to defamation and what consequences may follow.
