Gov Yusuf: ‘If His Defection Is Motivated by Huge Funds to Governors, Then It’s a Shame’ – Dungurawa

The Kano State Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples’ Party (NNPP), Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, has addressed circulating reports that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf may be considering leaving the party. Dungurawa praised the NNPP as one of Nigeria’s most structured, compliant, and legally grounded political parties.

Speaking with Arewa Punch on Thursday, he expressed disbelief over the speculation, noting that there had been no developments within the party that would justify such a move.

“There is no political party in this country that meets the standards of law and legitimacy like the NNPP,” Dungurawa said. “I honestly don’t understand why the Kano State Governor would be planning to abandon the party.”

Party Stability and National Presence

Dungurawa highlighted the NNPP’s extensive organizational reach, pointing out that the party maintains operational offices in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with strong structures and active leadership nationwide.

He warned that any decision by Governor Yusuf to defect could constitute a major political misstep. “This will be the greatest mistake he will make if he decides to leave the NNPP,” he cautioned.

Responding to claims of internal disputes between the party and the governor, Dungurawa firmly denied any conflicts. “As far as I know, the NNPP is stable, and there is no existing conflict between the party and the governor,” he said.

Kwankwaso’s Loyalty to the Party

The chairman also dismissed rumours that the NNPP’s national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, might join the All Progressives Congress (APC). He stressed that such claims are unfounded and highlighted Kwankwaso’s longstanding dedication to the party.

“Why would Kwankwaso do that?” Dungurawa asked. “He built this party from the ground up, and under his leadership, NNPP secured victories in Kano, Taraba, Bauchi, and Plateau.”

He added that anyone visiting Kwankwaso’s office would immediately notice the NNPP flag prominently displayed, symbolizing his enduring commitment to the party.

Possible Motivations Behind Yusuf’s Consideration

Offering his perspective on why Governor Yusuf might be contemplating a defection, Dungurawa suggested two possibilities.

First, he speculated that the governor may feel pressure from agencies such as the ICPC or EFCC. “Perhaps he is feeling threatened,” Dungurawa noted, “but even then, others have faced far greater accusations and persevered.”

Second, he hinted that financial incentives might be influencing the governor. “Maybe it is because of the huge funds being sent to governors. If that is the reason, then it is truly shameful,” he added.

Reminder of Popular Support

Dungurawa reminded Yusuf of the support he received from Kano citizens under the NNPP platform. “Kano people intentionally rejected the APC and voted for him through the NNPP,” he said. “He won in 2023, and by God’s grace, we are positioned to win again in 2027.”

He urged the governor to remain loyal to the party that facilitated his rise to power. “He has performed well in Kano, which is why I find it difficult to understand why he is considering leaving. He should reflect deeply and remain with the party that the people trusted,” Dungurawa concluded.

Analysis: Political Loyalty Versus Temptation

Observers suggest that these remarks reflect both a defense of party unity and a subtle admonition to Governor Yusuf. By emphasizing NNPP’s structure, national presence, and Kwankwaso’s loyalty, Dungurawa reinforces the argument that leaving the party for personal gain or financial incentive could harm the governor politically. Analysts also note that such public statements may aim to rally grassroots support and reaffirm confidence among party members in Kano ahead of the 2027 elections.
