Adeleke Faces No Rival in Osun, Accord Party Confirms

The Accord Party in Osun State has once again made it clear that Governor Ademola Adeleke is its sole candidate for the upcoming governorship election on August 8. Party officials emphasized that any claims of internal competition are unfounded and politically motivated.

Party Chairman Dismisses Rival Claims

Victor Akande, the Chairman of the Accord Party in Osun, addressed the media in Osogbo on Thursday, rejecting assertions that Clement Bamigbola might challenge Adeleke for the party ticket. According to Akande, such attempts are merely a drain on resources and time, as Adeleke’s position remains secure.

He said, “The so-called kangaroo primary allegedly conducted by a non-existent faction is just a ruse. There is no such faction within our party structure by law.” Akande stressed that reports of any internal division are entirely fabricated.

Precedents in Other States

Akande also referred to similar situations in other states, including Anambra and Ekiti, where the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) handled factional claims decisively. He assured that Osun would witness the same outcome, reiterating Adeleke’s uncontested status.

He noted, “Those spreading rumors about a factional candidate are merely political jobbers seeking attention and personal gain. I assure you, Governor Adeleke has no rival when it comes to our party’s ticket.”

APC Seen as Non-Threatening

Concerns about opposition from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governorship contender, Bola Oyebamiji, were also addressed. Akande expressed confidence that the ruling party poses little threat to Adeleke’s re-election.

Reflecting on APC’s past governance, he remarked, “We are fully aware of the APC’s record. They reduced workers to beggars through half-salary payments when they were in power. We will not allow a return to such a dark era.”

He further recalled APC’s rejection by Osun voters in the 2022 elections, emphasizing that history was likely to repeat itself. “The people rejected the APC at the polls in 2022, and come August, they will reinforce that decision, making it clear that Osun does not want a return to that era of darkness.”

Analysis: What This Means for Osun’s Political Landscape

The Accord Party’s public reaffirmation of Adeleke’s candidacy sends a strong signal of internal unity, likely discouraging potential rivals within the party. Meanwhile, the repeated reminders of APC’s previous shortcomings serve as a strategic message to voters, highlighting contrasts between Adeleke’s administration and the opposition. Analysts suggest that this approach could consolidate support among undecided voters who are wary of returning to policies of austerity and wage delays.

In sum, with no credible opposition from within his party and APC’s historical baggage, Adeleke appears to be in a commanding position as the August election approaches. How Osun voters respond will be pivotal in shaping the state’s political trajectory for the next four years.
