ADC Closely Watching Rivers State Political Developments

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has indicated that it is carefully monitoring unfolding events in Rivers State before taking a definitive stance. Amid escalating political drama, the opposition party says it prefers to assess developments thoroughly rather than rush into commentary.

Speaking on the matter, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, explained that the ADC is reviewing the situation in detail. According to him, the party intends to observe how the crisis evolves before issuing an official position, emphasizing the need for an informed and measured response.

At the center of the turbulence is Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, who are facing impeachment proceedings initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly. The move has intensified political uncertainty within the oil-rich state and sparked renewed debate about shifting alliances and power struggles.

The impeachment effort comes months after a significant political realignment. In early December 2025, several lawmakers—about 17 members of the Assembly—defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Shortly afterward, Governor Fubara also joined the APC, a move widely interpreted as a strategic bid to stabilize his political footing.

However, the expected calm did not materialize. Friction has continued between Fubara and Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a dominant political figure in Rivers politics. Public exchanges between the two have fueled speculation that deeper rivalries remain unresolved despite party alignment.

Wike had previously cautioned that Fubara’s political future could face serious obstacles, while the governor projected confidence in his leadership position, even referencing his APC membership credentials as a symbol of authority within the party’s structure in the state.

Notably, the current impeachment attempt is not unprecedented. It represents the third effort by the Assembly to unseat Fubara. Earlier moves in 2023 and 2025 failed to achieve that outcome, though the 2025 episode occurred just before the declaration of a state of emergency, adding another layer of complexity to the state’s political history.

With another impeachment process underway, analysts are questioning whether this latest challenge will follow the pattern of previous unsuccessful attempts or signal a turning point in Rivers State’s leadership trajectory.

Commentary and Analysis: Strategic Silence or Calculated Patience?

The ADC’s decision to withhold immediate judgment may reflect a broader strategy common among opposition parties—careful positioning in volatile political situations. By observing rather than reacting impulsively, the party leaves room to adapt its narrative depending on how events unfold.

Rivers State has long been a hotspot of intense political maneuvering, and shifting allegiances often fail to resolve underlying rivalries. The continued friction between Fubara and Wike suggests that party membership alone does not eliminate personal or structural conflicts.

As the impeachment drama progresses, the outcome could significantly reshape the political landscape in Rivers. Whether Governor Fubara withstands the pressure or faces removal, the episode underscores the fluid and often unpredictable nature of Nigerian state politics.
