The Federal Government has set aside a total of ₦7.01 billion for the travel expenses of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima in the proposed 2026 budget.
According to the proposal, ₦6.14 billion is earmarked for President Tinubu’s international trips, while ₦873.88 million is allocated for his domestic travel, bringing his total travel budget for the year to ₦7.01 billion.
For Vice President Shettima, the 2026 appropriation bill proposes ₦1.73 billion for travel and transportation, including ₦417.48 million for domestic travel and ₦1.31 billion for international trips.
In 2024, President Tinubu reduced the number of officials accompanying him on both local and foreign trips by 60 percent in an effort to curb government spending. Even with this reduction, the combined travel budget for the president and vice president in 2024 was planned at ₦8 billion.
The 2026 federal budget, totaling ₦58.18 trillion, was presented to the National Assembly by President Tinubu on December 19, 2025. Already approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the budget outlines government priorities for the coming year, including official travel allocations for top executives.
The travel allocations have sparked public debate, with some questioning the overall cost of executive travel. However, the government has defended the spending, stating that it is essential for diplomatic engagements and international cooperation.
