Wike Says Only President Tinubu Has the Power to Remove Him from Office

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has addressed mounting calls for his removal, emphasizing that the authority to dismiss him lies solely with President Bola Tinubu, the appointing authority. Speaking during a gratitude visit to Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, Wike reassured supporters that external pressure carries no weight in determining his tenure.

Highlighting the distinction between public opinion and executive power, Wike remarked, “Don’t pay attention to those asking for my removal because they have no such power. The decision doesn’t rest with them.” He stressed that only the individual who appointed him can assess his performance and make any decision regarding his position: “If the person who appointed me believes I no longer have anything to contribute, he can decide to remove me. It’s not for anyone else to dictate.”

During the visit, Wike underscored the achievements of his administration in the FCT, pointing out that both the local residents and Nigerians more broadly recognize the progress made under his leadership. “I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished. Obio/Akpor people are proud, Rivers people are proud, and we can confidently say to Nigerians that we have not fallen short in managing the FCT,” he noted.

He also framed criticism as a natural response to effective performance, suggesting that public scrutiny is often reserved for those making a tangible impact. “I said this yesterday in Port Harcourt, and I want people to take note: if you are not performing, no one will talk about you,” Wike added, highlighting that attention and critique are indicators of relevance in public service.

Commentary and Analysis

Wike’s statement reflects a broader principle in governance: the legitimacy of dismissal is anchored in executive appointment rather than popular sentiment. His remarks also serve as a political message to critics, signaling that efforts to influence his tenure through public pressure are largely symbolic. Observers note that Wike’s emphasis on his record in the FCT is aimed at reinforcing public confidence while reminding political actors that his removal requires a formal executive decision.

By underscoring the distinction between criticism and authority, Wike frames the debate around performance metrics and formal accountability rather than partisan pressures. This approach may strengthen his political capital within Rivers State while maintaining visibility at the national level.
