Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), has yet to fulfill the bail conditions granted to him by a Federal High Court, as a fresh probe into arms and ammunition allegedly found in his Kebbi State residence complicates his legal situation.
Gossip News Now reports that Malami, who was granted bail alongside his son, Abdulaziz, and wife, Asabe Bashir, remains in custody at Kuje Correctional Centre, having failed to meet the stringent requirements set by the court.
Sources indicate that Malami is facing a separate investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS) following the alleged discovery of weapons at his country home in Birnin Kebbi.
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) reportedly uncovered the arms during a search of the property. Because illegal possession of firearms falls outside the EFCC’s mandate, the items were handed over to the DSS for further scrutiny.
While the exact quantity of the recovered weapons remains unconfirmed, sources suggest the haul was significant enough to prompt a full-scale DSS investigation.
Security insiders told reporters that Malami may be intentionally delaying the completion of his bail to avoid immediate rearrest by DSS operatives over the arms-related probe.
“Malami has slowed down his bail processing as DSS operatives surround Kuje Prison, preparing to arrest him on terrorism-related charges once he is released,” a top security source said.
Another source added, “The former minister is being separately investigated for allegedly having arms in his Birnin Kebbi residence. The inventory of the weapons has been handed over to the DSS. Malami now has to explain to the DSS how he came about them.”
DSS operatives are reportedly maintaining strategic positions around Kuje Correctional Centre, heightening security at the facility.
An EFCC source confirmed that Malami remains in custody and has not satisfied the court’s bail conditions, dismissing social media reports claiming he had been released and returned to Kebbi State.
“By our records, the ex-AGF is still in custody. There are numerous fake videos circulating online suggesting he has returned to Kebbi and was given a rousing reception,” the source stated.
The EFCC official added that investigations into Malami’s activities did not start recently but date back to 2019.
“The probe began during the tenure of former EFCC Acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu, continued under Acting Chairman Ibrahim Chukkol, and has persisted into the current administration. There is nothing vindictive about this case; it is an inherited investigation, and the ex-AGF is aware of this,” the source said.
