The wife of Ogun State’s first civilian governor, Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, Madam Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo, has reportedly passed away at the age of 100.

Gossip News Now reports that her death was announced on Tuesday by her daughter, Ms Olubukunola Onabanjo. The family described her passing as a “transition to glory” after a long and fulfilling life.

In a statement, Ms Onabanjo said:

“The family of Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, former Governor of Ogun State, announces with deep sorrow, yet with gratitude to Almighty God, the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Chief (Mrs) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo (1925–2026) was called to glory on Monday, January 11.
We thank God for her long and fulfilled life, and for the enduring legacy of love, strength and faith she leaves behind.”

Born in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, Madam Onabanjo moved to Lagos at about age 10, where she completed her early education. She later attended a Teachers’ Training College in Yaba, Lagos, and dedicated herself to teaching—a profession that shaped her lifelong values and commitment to service.

She worked as a teacher for 22 years before retiring, a career she described as both deliberate and fulfilling, allowing her to balance professional responsibilities with family life.

Her marriage to the late Chief Bisi Onabanjo was blessed with four children—two sons and two daughters—though their first daughter predeceased them. Despite her husband’s prominent political stature, Madam Onabanjo was known for her simple lifestyle, modest home, and preference for traditional foods.

She strongly emphasised proper home training, often encouraging parents to be present and intentional in raising children, while expressing concern over modern parenting trends that she believed allowed children undue influence over their parents.

A devout Catholic, Madam Onabanjo served as Iya Ijo of St. Sebastian Catholic Cathedral in Ijebu-Ode, actively participating in both church and community activities.

During her 100th birthday celebration in October 2025, President Bola Tinubu paid tribute to her, calling her “a reflection of grace, wisdom, and enduring service.” He also commended her lifelong devotion, resilience, and moral strength—qualities that many say defined her legacy.

Madam Lucia Onabanjo’s passing closes a remarkable century-long journey characterized by faith, service, humility, and family values.
