The Nigerian government has officially contracted the Washington-based public affairs firm, DCI Group, in a $9 million deal to enhance communication with U.S. lawmakers and the public regarding the country’s measures to protect its Christian population.

The agreement, confirmed by filings with the U.S. Department of Justice, involves strategic messaging and advocacy to convey Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to curb religious violence, particularly against Christians, and to maintain international support for counter-terrorism initiatives in West Africa.

Representing Nigeria in the engagement is National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, acting through Aster Legal. The six-month contract, effective from December 17, 2025, includes an option for automatic renewal for another six months. A pre-payment of $4.5 million was made ahead of the contract, with the remaining funds scheduled for installment after six months. Monthly fees and professional expenses are set at $750,000.

The contract outlines DCI Group’s role in facilitating diplomatic channels with U.S. officials, ensuring that Nigeria’s security measures and interventions are clearly communicated to international stakeholders. The firm is expected to address concerns regarding jihadist activities and other destabilizing threats in the region, as well as the reported attacks on Christian communities.

The move comes amid heightened scrutiny from Washington over allegations of “Christian genocide” in Nigeria. Although former U.S. President Donald Trump previously labeled the country a “country of particular concern,” Nigerian authorities have consistently rejected the genocide claims, emphasizing the government’s ongoing security and protection strategies.

In addition to countering misinformation, the lobbying effort seeks to maintain U.S. engagement in regional security matters. Officials in Abuja have highlighted that such communications are critical to preventing misunderstandings and potential unilateral actions, which could include military involvement as hinted at in prior U.S. statements.

Commentary and Analysis: By investing $9 million in U.S.-based lobbying, Nigeria is signaling a proactive approach to international public diplomacy. Beyond refuting allegations, the engagement represents an effort to reassure global partners of the country’s commitment to protecting vulnerable populations and combating extremism. Analysts note that the move may also set a precedent for future interactions with foreign governments, emphasizing the importance of strategic communications in managing international perceptions of domestic security challenges.
