Former Zamfara governorship candidate, Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, has accused the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, of allegedly preventing his supporters from being registered as members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) through the ongoing e-registration exercise.
In a letter dated January 14 and addressed to the APC National Secretariat, Shinkafi claimed that members of his political group, the “Wamban Shinkafi Democratic Front,” spread across all 14 Local Government Areas and 147 wards, were being systematically shut out of the registration process.
According to Naija News, the APC in Zamfara recently launched its electronic membership registration across all LGAs in the state.
Shinkafi, however, expressed strong concerns about the exercise, insisting that the alleged exclusion violates Article 9(1) of the APC constitution.
Part of the letter reads:
“The provisions of Article 9 of the APC constitution have been violated, and in line with the stipulations of the same section, we have been left with no option but to seek remedy.”
He stated that numerous complaints were received from APC members aligned with his movement, claiming that local government and ward chairmen were instructed to leave out all individuals loyal to him during the e-registration.
He alleged that the deliberate removal of some local government and ward executives from the exercise was a calculated move to block his supporters from participating in the membership update.
Citing reports from his coordinators across the state, Shinkafi further alleged that Minister Bello Matawalle was behind the exclusion of his loyalists, despite their status as legitimate APC members.
He warned that the situation threatens to undermine the integrity of the reform process, fueling internal divisions and weakening unity within the Zamfara APC.
Shinkafi appealed to the APC National Chairman to immediately set up an independent and transparent investigative panel to probe the alleged manipulation, stressing that any individual found guilty should face disciplinary sanctions as outlined in the party’s constitution.
He cautioned that failure to address the matter promptly could jeopardize the objectives of the digital registration initiative introduced by the party’s leadership.
Shinkafi accused officials handling the registration of compromising their responsibilities and betraying the trust placed in them by the national leadership.
He urged party leaders to ensure transparency, fairness, and impartiality in the ongoing nationwide e-registration exercise, warning that no member should be sidelined due to political allegiance or influence from powerful figures within the state.
According to him, intimidation, harassment, and attempts to suppress dissenting voices are threatening internal democracy within the APC.
He concluded by appealing to the APC National Working Committee to urgently intervene to prevent renewed factional crises in Zamfara and a repeat of the electoral losses experienced in 2019 and 2023, when the party lost to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
