Atiku’s Son Leaves PDP for APC, Declares Support for Tinubu

Nigeria’s political landscape witnessed another shift as Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, popularly called Abba and son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, formally exited the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement was made at the National Assembly, where Abba’s membership in the ruling party was officially received by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and other APC stakeholders, particularly from the North-East.

Why He Switched

Explaining his decision, Abba pointed to personal convictions and historical reflections as key motivators. He emphasized that his political journey is guided by independent judgment rather than inherited loyalties.

He further directed members of his political structure — the Haske Atiku Organisation, established in 2022 — to dissolve into the APC framework and actively support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

In his remarks, Abba described the moment as a deliberate step forward, stating that his departure from his former platform marks the beginning of deeper engagement within the ruling party’s vision for governance.

APC Welcomes New Entrant

APC leaders characterized the defection as symbolic of the party’s growing appeal. National Vice Chairman (North-East), Comrade Mustapha Salihu, described the development as proof that political affiliation is not confined by family legacy or regional boundaries.

Senator Barau Jibrin also praised the move, framing it as a decision rooted in ideology rather than familial ties. According to him, Abba’s endorsement of Tinubu reflects belief in policy direction and long-term national objectives.

Strategic Implications

Although Abba does not hold elective office, his public alignment carries symbolic weight given his father’s position as a leading opposition figure. Analysts note that such high-profile defections often aim to project momentum and unity within the receiving party.

At the same time, observers caution against overstating the electoral impact of individual crossovers. Nigerian politics frequently witnesses realignments driven by strategy, ambition, or shifting calculations ahead of election cycles.

Commentary: Personal Agency in a Polarised Climate

Abba’s move reinforces a recurring theme in Nigeria’s democracy — personal political agency can diverge sharply from family affiliation. It also underscores how the ruling party continues to consolidate alliances in preparation for 2027.

For the PDP, the development presents a public relations challenge but not necessarily a structural blow. For the APC, it offers another narrative of expansion and inclusivity.

As the political tempo gradually rises toward the next general election, individual decisions such as this contribute to the broader mosaic of alliances shaping Nigeria’s evolving power dynamics.
