Fresh Details Emerge From President Tinubu’s Meeting With Governor Yusuf

Fresh revelations have emerged indicating that Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, is preparing to officially defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

This follows a private meeting held between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the governor on Monday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Sources familiar with the engagement told Daily Trust that the discussions helped settle lingering political issues that had previously delayed Yusuf’s planned defection, paving the way for a formal announcement expected in the coming days.

The closed-door meeting comes after weeks of political tension and speculation in Kano State, where reports of Yusuf’s possible move to the APC have dominated conversations and reportedly strained his long-standing alliance with former governor and NNPP national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Insiders revealed that the governor’s earlier hesitation stemmed from concerns about his political future within the APC. These reportedly included guarantees regarding his 2027 re-election ambition, the survival of his existing political structure, and the protection of his loyal supporters within the ruling party.

Sources confirmed that these concerns were addressed during his meeting with President Tinubu.

“He could make the formal announcement as early as tomorrow (Tuesday) or shortly after, as all outstanding issues have been resolved,” a source said. “The president is keen on having him in the APC, and the governor also wants to align closely with the president.”

Governor Yusuf declined to grant interviews after leaving the Presidential Villa, offering only a brief comment that he “will be back.”

The meeting reportedly lasted close to three hours. Yusuf arrived at the Villa around 4:10pm, dressed in a white traditional attire (babbar riga) and a red cap, and left shortly after 7:00pm.

Speculation surrounding Yusuf’s potential defection has persisted since late last year, following subtle political moves suggesting a possible realignment with the APC-led federal government.

Sources further disclosed that President Tinubu personally assured the Kano governor of his strategic importance to the APC, particularly in Kano State and the wider North-West region, where the party experienced setbacks during the 2023 general elections.
