APC chieftain Joe Igbokwe has called on the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to intervene over the ongoing demolition of properties owned by Igbos in Lagos.
Igbokwe, in a Facebook post, revealed that he has received numerous complaints from members of the Igbo community regarding their houses being demolished by state officials.
He emphasised the significant role Igbos play in Lagos’s development through their substantial investments and urged the governor to find an amicable resolution to the matter.
“This is my advice to the Igbo community in Lagos. If you plan to buy land, ensure thorough due diligence. Engage a lawyer to verify the land at the Ministry of Lands in Alausa to confirm it is available for purchase and not reserved. Buying existing structures to rebuild is also a safer option, based on experience,” Igbokwe wrote.
He added, “Hundreds of Igbos have reached out to me daily, expressing distress over losing their homes. As the leader of Ndigbo in APC Lagos, I am appealing to my principal, Governor Sanwo-Olu, to intervene and provide a solution.”
Igbokwe further highlighted the Igbo community’s contribution to Lagos, noting their longstanding presence and massive investments in the state.
“Igbo live in Lagos in large numbers and are a driving force behind the city’s growth. Having spent over 40 years here, I am well aware of their significant investments, all visible for everyone to see. We are all Nigerians, regardless of tribe,” he stated.
The APC leader described his personal stress over the issue, saying, “I am besieged. I am tired. I am exhausted. I am choked. I am diminished. I am weak. I am under pressure every day. I want a solution to this serious matter. I want bridges of understanding and mutual respect. I want lasting peace between Igbos and Yorubas in Lagos.”
