The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) came to an end in Morocco on January 18, with Senegal crowned champions after edging hosts Morocco 1-0 in a tightly contested final.
A decisive second-half strike from Pape Gueye secured the title for the Teranga Lions, but beyond the trophy, post-tournament statistics highlighted several remarkable team and individual achievements.
Despite lifting the trophy, Senegal also finished as the most penalised team of the competition. They accumulated a total of 17 yellow cards and one red card, placing them at the top of the disciplinary rankings.
Egypt, who ended the tournament in fourth place following their defeat in the third-place playoff, recorded the highest number of offsides, finishing with 15.
On the defensive front, both Senegal and Morocco stood out, sharing the record for the most clean sheets, with five each across the tournament.
However, the showpiece final was later overshadowed by controversy. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the removal of Ousmane Kane, President of its Disciplinary Committee, from all matters linked to the investigation into the final, due to concerns over potential conflicts of interest.
Kane’s Senegalese background raised questions about neutrality, prompting CAF to take precautionary measures to maintain transparency and credibility throughout the investigative process.
CAF has since launched a formal inquiry into incidents that disrupted the final, including alleged misconduct. Match officials’ reports and security assessments are currently under review, with several individuals already facing legal consequences.
As the investigation continues, CAF is expected to appoint a new senior official to supervise the disciplinary proceedings. A conclusive decision on the matter is anticipated in the coming days.
