Rwanda’s head coach, Adel Amrouche, has expressed shock over Nigeria’s difficulties in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, stating that a team of the Super Eagles’ caliber should not be struggling to secure a place in the global tournament.
The Super Eagles are in danger of missing a second consecutive World Cup following an inconsistent run in Group C, where they currently sit third, behind Benin Republic and South Africa, with just one game left to play.
So far, the three-time African champions have recorded three wins, five draws, and one loss in nine matches, leaving their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
Nigeria will face Benin Republic in their final qualifying game in Uyo, but their fate is no longer entirely in their hands. Even with a victory, they must rely on South Africa dropping points at home to Rwanda to have a chance of topping the group.
Speaking with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Amrouche said Nigeria’s current struggles do not match the immense talent available to them.
“If I were coaching a team like the Super Eagles, with the quality of players they have, my minimum target would be reaching the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup. Qualifying should never be the issue,” he stated.
Despite his criticism, the Algerian tactician defended Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, urging supporters to show patience and faith.
“Eric is a good coach. I know some people are against him, but he’s beginning to do his job. Don’t be negative — you must respect your coach,” Amrouche added.
Amrouche, who took charge of Rwanda in March, has previously managed Kenya, Libya, Burundi, Tanzania, and Botswana, earning a reputation for building competitive teams even with limited resources.
