Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, is set to make his return to Nigeria after spending years in self-imposed exile, following interventions by prominent traditional rulers who facilitated his clearance and reintegration.

His spokesperson, Olayomi Koiki, revealed that the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, alongside the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, played pivotal roles in ensuring that all obstacles preventing Igboho’s return were removed.

According to Koiki, the involvement of the revered monarchs and other key stakeholders in the South-West paved the way for his safe return, although a specific homecoming date has yet to be announced.

“This is a joyous moment for Ibadanland and the entire Yorubaland. Chief Sunday Adeyemo has now been cleared to return to Nigeria and is no longer being sought by government authorities,” Koiki said.

He added, “With the backing of our royal father, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Adeyemo is now a free man. He will soon be back home in Ibadan.”

Koiki noted that additional information regarding Igboho’s travel plans would be communicated in the coming days.

In 2025, Igboho openly expressed frustration over his extended stay outside the country, saying he had grown weary of life in exile.

During a visit to the palace of the Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Olusola Alao, in Oyo State, he appealed to the administration of President Bola Tinubu to remove his name from Nigeria’s wanted list, maintaining that he had committed no crime.

He explained that he had been declared wanted by the government of late President Muhammadu Buhari over an unspecified offence, which prevented him from obtaining a Nigerian passport and accessing his bank accounts, despite favourable court judgments.

In a statement, his supporters expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu, traditional rulers across Yorubaland, and Yoruba communities worldwide for their unwavering support throughout his years in exile.

Igboho rose to national prominence in January 2021 after issuing a seven-day ultimatum to herders in Igangan, Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State, following the killing of a notable community leader, Fatai Aborode.

His activism, particularly in matters of regional security and the rights of the Yoruba people, gained widespread support but also attracted intense government scrutiny.

On July 1, 2021, operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) stormed his residence in Ibadan in an attempt to arrest him, leading to a violent confrontation that resulted in the death of two of his associates.

Igboho later fled to the Benin Republic, planning to travel onward to Germany, but was arrested on July 19, 2021, at Cotonou Airport. He remained in detention for nearly two years before regaining his freedom in March 2022.

His arrest and prolonged detention sparked nationwide outrage and protests, with many Nigerians demanding his immediate release.
