The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Senator Nenadi Usman, has said she is uncertain about the exact motives driving opposition politicians to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during an appearance on TVC News’ Politics on Sunday programme, Usman reacted to the recent wave of defections from opposition parties, including the Labour Party, to the APC, noting that the underlying reasons remain unclear.
She stressed that the ongoing movement of politicians to the ruling party does not in any way indicate the collapse of opposition strength ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the LP leader, some defectors may be influenced by widespread claims suggesting that political transgressions are overlooked once individuals align with the APC, though she admitted she could not confirm such claims.
“You asked what I think is making them rush into the APC. Honestly, I do not know what is pushing them in that direction. We hear many things. There are rumours that once you join the APC, your sins are forgiven. So, it could be that, but I truly do not know,” she said.
When asked if the Labour Party possesses the political strength to present a formidable presidential candidate capable of challenging the APC in the 2027 elections, Usman avoided a direct response, stating that it was still too early to make such determinations.
She explained that decisions regarding candidate selection and electoral strategy would be made at the appropriate time.
“When we get to that stage, we will address it. Whether we will field a candidate and the process for doing so are not decisions I can personally take at this moment,” she added.
