The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) colours of red and white have been completely removed from the Kano State Government House as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf prepares to officially defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) today.
By early Monday morning, APC flags had been mounted at the main entrances and across key sections of the Government House, signalling an imminent political transition and confirming preparations for the governor’s formal declaration.
The development marks a significant political turning point in Kano State, ushering in a new era of party dominance.
Reports from TVC News indicate that the Government House has been placed on full alert ahead of the highly anticipated reception ceremony, where Governor Yusuf is expected to publicly announce his move to the ruling party later today.
The official declaration is scheduled to take place shortly after the launch of the APC’s electronic membership registration exercise in the state.
Prior to finalising his decision, Yusuf reportedly held a private meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, a development that further intensified speculation surrounding his anticipated defection, which had been the subject of widespread rumours for several weeks.
Earlier unconfirmed reports had suggested that the defection was initially delayed due to unresolved negotiations, allegedly connected to discussions over the governor’s political future, including demands for an automatic second-term ticket.
In a statement released on Sunday and signed by his Director-General of Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature, Governor Yusuf officially confirmed his intention to join the APC, following his formal resignation from the NNPP last Friday.
The statement also highlighted that Yusuf was not new to the APC, noting that he first joined the party in 2014, when he emerged as the winner of its primary election for the Kano Central Senatorial seat.
He later stepped aside in favour of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who subsequently contested the election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the time.
