The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that the growing number of governors defecting to the party reflects a broader realignment with what it described as a renewed and forward-looking Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, explained that the recent wave of defections signals increasing confidence in the leadership and policies of President Bola Tinubu.
Morka emphasized that the APC remains open and welcoming to new members, stressing that the party has no intention of acting as a gatekeeper to block politicians who wish to join.
He stated, “What we are witnessing are governors choosing to associate with this new and resurging Nigeria that the President is clearly shaping.
“We are pleased and encouraged when people decide to join our party. We do not position ourselves as gatekeepers to screen or filter out those who want to be part of us, because doing so would be undemocratic.”
Responding to concerns that the defections could pave the way for a one-party system, the APC spokesman dismissed such fears, noting that Nigeria has previously experienced similar political dominance without compromising democratic values.
“At a point in our political history, the Peoples Democratic Party governed the country with nearly the same number of governors.
“I was actively involved in politics at that time, and there was no widespread fear of a one-party state simply because the PDP had a large number of governors. That situation is not different from what we are seeing today, and we should not interpret people joining our party as a move toward that outcome,” Morka added.
