Fresh reports indicate that Kano State lawmakers aligned with Governor Abba Yusuf are holding consultations aimed at initiating impeachment proceedings against the state’s deputy governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.

According to Daily Trust, the lawmakers are pushing for Gwarzo to step down should he refuse to defect alongside the governor.

Following Yusuf’s reported move to the All Progressives Congress (APC), pressure has mounted on the deputy governor to relinquish his position, particularly after he declined to follow the governor into the new party.

However, a senior official within the deputy governor’s office, who spoke anonymously, disclosed that Gwarzo has no intention of resigning unless he receives direct instructions from Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

“Honestly, he will not resign. He is waiting for Kwankwaso’s directive, and that is why the situation remains uncertain,” the source said. “Some close associates had advised him to step aside earlier, but he chose to wait for guidance from his political godfather.”

Meanwhile, the Kano State House of Assembly has clarified that no formal impeachment matter concerning the deputy governor has been tabled before the legislature.

Speaking to the publication, the Assembly’s spokesperson, Kamal Shawai, said the House is currently on recess and will not resume plenary sessions until February.

Shawai explained that although lawmakers had informal discussions surrounding the governor’s defection, no official communication or motion regarding impeachment had been submitted for consideration.

“Several issues, including the governor’s defection, were discussed informally last Monday, and some lawmakers later formalized their decisions,” he said. “However, the matter of impeachment is not before the House at this time, especially as legislative activities have been suspended due to the recess.”

He added that any formal deliberation on the issue would only take place when lawmakers reconvene.

“By February 2, when the House resumes, if there is any such matter, it will be presented for debate,” he stated.
