Former First Lady of Ondo State, Betty Akeredolu, has publicly declared her support for Peter Obi as the preferred presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a post shared on her verified 𝕏 handle on Friday, Mrs Anyanwu-Akeredolu reaffirmed her loyalty to the Obidient Movement, quoting a report that linked her to Obi’s political aspirations and simply stating, “Obi or nothing.”
Her endorsement comes at a time of intense internal debate within the ADC, as supporters of Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar reportedly compete for the party’s 2027 presidential ticket.
Obi, who recently aligned with the ADC as part of a broader opposition coalition, has continued to gain traction among his followers. Many of his supporters are advocating for the presidency to be zoned to the South, with Obi positioned as the party’s leading candidate.
Reacting to the growing tensions, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, cautioned party members and supporters against actions that could deepen divisions within the party.
Speaking during a live 𝕏 Spaces discussion last Saturday, Abdullahi urged loyalists to avoid promoting “division and a sense of exceptionality” that could weaken internal unity.
He also addressed suggestions that the 2027 general elections might be brought forward to 2026, describing the proposal as a double-edged sword. According to him, while an early election could expose unresolved internal issues, it might also present a strategic advantage, particularly given widespread public dissatisfaction with the current administration.
Abdullahi further disclosed that he has engaged in consultations with key opposition figures, including Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai, in a bid to foster unity within the ADC-led coalition.
“These engagements are aimed at strengthening our party and ensuring we are fully prepared for the next general elections,” he said.
The ADC is expected to conduct its presidential primaries in June, amid mounting pressure to finalise zoning decisions and manage the increasing interest of prominent political figures within and outside the party.
