Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta will not be included in the squad for Sunday’s Premier League away fixture against Nottingham Forest, with head coach Oliver Glasner explaining that the forward is not mentally prepared to feature amid increasing transfer speculation.
Interest in the France international has grown in recent weeks, with AC Milan stepping up their pursuit after making initial contact earlier in January. Palace remain firm on their valuation, reportedly demanding £40 million, having already turned down a £35 million bid from Nottingham Forest.
Glasner Explains Decision to Leave Mateta Behind
Speaking during his pre-match press conference on Friday, Glasner confirmed that Mateta would not travel to the City Ground for the 14:00 kick-off.
“This isn’t about transfers right now,” Glasner said. “He’s not in the right place mentally.
“It doesn’t make sense for him to play. I have to protect the team, and I also have to protect him.
“That’s why he won’t be travelling with us to Nottingham.”
Transfer Noise Affecting Focus
The 28-year-old has been Palace’s most consistent attacking threat this season, scoring eight Premier League goals. However, reports suggest he informed the club earlier this month of his intention to leave.
Glasner admitted that the surrounding speculation has taken a toll.
“There’s a lot of noise, a lot of rumours, and many things happening around him,” he explained.
“We need every player operating at their best, and JP isn’t at that level right now because of everything going on.
“Whether it’s football-related speculation or personal matters that affect focus, it makes no sense to play someone who can’t perform at their highest level. He wouldn’t be able to help the team, so we decided it’s better he doesn’t play.”
Palace Planning Amid Squad Changes
Crystal Palace currently sit 15th in the Premier League and are still adapting following the sale of club captain Marc Guéhi to Manchester City during the winter transfer window.
Although the England defender has yet to be replaced, Glasner expressed confidence that the club is working hard behind the scenes ahead of Monday’s deadline.
“The club is basically working around the clock at the moment,” Glasner said.
“Marc left two weeks ago and we haven’t brought anyone in yet. You can imagine how difficult it is — every club wants to have a successful season, and signing players at the end of January is never easy.
“But I see how hard the club is working to bring in replacements for Marc, and of course we’re also preparing for all possible scenarios involving JP.”
Palace Monitor Striker Options
Glasner also confirmed that Wolves striker Jørgen Strand Larsen remains a player of interest as Palace prepare for different outcomes regarding Mateta’s future.
“To be clear, there are two possibilities,” Glasner said. “Mateta could still be a Palace player on February 2, or he could leave and we bring in a new striker.
“These are the situations we’re currently discussing.”
Palace were reportedly willing to offer £50 million for the Norway international, but the move is now uncertain after the club indicated it may walk away from negotiations.
Meanwhile, Wolves manager Rob Edwards confirmed on Friday that the 25-year-old striker is available for Saturday’s match against Bournemouth.
