2027: ‘Several APC Members Won’t Secure Tickets’ — PDP’s Sowunmi

A prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has predicted that many politicians defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) will fail to obtain the party tickets they seek ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sowunmi made the assertion amid the recent wave of defections by PDP governors to the ruling APC as political alignments intensify toward 2027.

Speaking on Friday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the PDP chieftain argued that while state governors play influential roles, they do not singularly determine electoral outcomes.

According to him, several developments expected before the next general election may surprise political observers.

Sowunmi acknowledged the significance of governors but insisted that ultimate power rests with the electorate, stressing that public resolve has historically reshaped nations through civic action.

He dismissed claims that the growing number of defections signaled a settled political outcome, suggesting that unresolved internal issues within the PDP—particularly prolonged court cases—had weakened the party’s current standing.

Sowunmi maintained that if the PDP had resolved its legal challenges earlier, the political situation would look markedly different today.

He further predicted that many politicians currently within the APC would be stunned when party primaries deny them the tickets they expect, adding that the ease with which campaigns could begin would become clearer over time.

Emphasising the PDP’s political pedigree, Sowunmi described the party as a long-established institution with nationwide recognition, strong grassroots structures, and enduring symbols familiar to the electorate.

Although he admitted dissatisfaction with the PDP’s present position, Sowunmi said he was increasingly convinced that the party’s current struggles were part of a broader democratic journey, describing the PDP as a foundational training ground for governance and political power in Nigeria.
