The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has condemned the vandalisation of public infrastructure and urged authorities to take extremely tough action against those sabotaging federal road projects.

Onanuga made the remarks on Sunday via a post on 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) while reacting to a viral video showing damage to sections of the Ibadan–Ilesa/Ife federal highway, which is currently undergoing reconstruction.

In his reaction, the presidential aide expressed outrage over what he described as deliberate sabotage of a critical national asset, calling the perpetrators enemies of public progress.

The video that triggered the reaction showed individuals wearing reflective jackets bearing the insignia of the Federal Ministry of Works, explaining how essential components of the road project were being systematically removed.

According to one of the officials in the footage, vandals had targeted the starter bars used in the construction process, cutting and removing them from several sections of the road.

He explained that while some of the starter bars were firmly embedded, others were either cut off or completely removed, weakening the integrity of the ongoing construction work.

Starter bars, also known as shoulder rods, are vital reinforcement materials used to ensure proper alignment and structural strength in road construction.

The Ibadan–Ilesa/Ife expressway, which links Oyo and Osun states, is a major federal highway and one of the key infrastructure projects being handled by the federal government to improve interstate connectivity and stimulate economic activities across the region.
