The legal adviser to Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Jiti Ogunye, has defended his client against growing calls for resignation over the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) controversy, arguing that such demands are misplaced.
According to Gossip News Now, Ogunye maintained that Gbajabiamila had minimal official involvement with Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, the individual at the centre of the controversy, compared to several other senior government officials.
Lawyer Rejects Calls For Gbajabiamila’s Resignation
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Ogunye insisted there was no basis for asking the Chief of Staff to leave office solely because investigations into the PFIPC matter are ongoing.
He argued that available official records indicate that other government offices had significantly more documented interactions with Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi than the office of Femi Gbajabiamila.
Four Government Offices Mentioned
While defending his principal, Ogunye identified several key government institutions that he said maintained more substantial official dealings with the individual involved in the controversy.
The offices he referenced include:
- The Director-General of the Budget Office
- The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation
- The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF)
- The Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation
According to him, official correspondence, administrative approvals and documented engagements show that these offices interacted more frequently with Adeyemi than Gbajabiamila’s office.
Official Records Should Guide Public Debate
Ogunye argued that discussions surrounding the controversy should be based on documented evidence rather than public speculation.
He maintained that if resignation is being demanded solely because an investigation is underway, then fairness would require that attention also be directed toward every office that had more extensive official contact with the individual at the centre of the allegations.
Rather than targeting one official, he suggested investigators should objectively review the available documentary evidence before assigning responsibility.
He Questions Focus On Chief Of Staff
The legal practitioner expressed surprise that much of the public attention has centred on Femi Gbajabiamila, despite what he described as limited official interaction between his office and Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi.
Rephrasing his position, Ogunye argued that it would be inconsistent to single out the Chief of Staff while overlooking agencies and offices that allegedly processed requests, exchanged official correspondence and maintained more direct administrative engagements.
He further suggested that those institutions may be better positioned to provide explanations if investigators require clarification on specific official transactions.
Investigation Expected To Continue
Although the PFIPC controversy continues to generate public debate, Ogunye emphasized that investigations should proceed independently and without prejudice.
He maintained that determining accountability should be left to competent investigative authorities after examining all available documents and evidence relating to the case.
Analysis: PFIPC Debate Shifts Beyond One Office
Ogunye’s remarks have broadened the discussion surrounding the PFIPC controversy by drawing attention to the involvement of multiple government institutions rather than focusing exclusively on Femi Gbajabiamila.
As investigations continue, the outcome is likely to depend on documentary evidence, administrative procedures and the findings of the relevant authorities. The case may also influence future conversations about accountability, due diligence and oversight within federal government institutions.
