The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State has announced January 25, 2026, as the date for its primary elections to choose candidates for the forthcoming local government chairmanship and councillorship polls.
The party’s State Chairman, Stanley Okoro Emegha, made this known on Monday while speaking with journalists in Abakaliki, shortly after a meeting of the State Executive Council.
Emegha disclosed that preparations for the primaries would commence early in January, assuring party members and the public that the process would be transparent and well-coordinated.
“The primaries for both councillorship and chairmanship positions will take place on January 25, while all preparatory activities will begin earlier in the month,” he stated.
He issued a stern warning to political appointees serving under Governor Francis Nwifuru who intend to contest in the primaries, stressing that they must resign their appointments at least 30 days before the exercise.
“Any appointee of the governor who wishes to contest must submit a resignation letter. Anyone who failed to resign on or before December 20, 2025, will not be eligible to participate,” Emegha warned.
The APC chairman also revealed that the party would soon begin a membership revalidation exercise once it receives its official registration code. He emphasized that fairness, openness, and accountability would guide the exercise and other internal party activities.
Emegha further highlighted the party’s growing dominance in Ebonyi State, noting that transparency and inclusiveness remain key to sustaining its strength across the state.
In a major infrastructural development, he announced that construction of a new APC state secretariat has commenced. According to him, the project is expected to be completed within six months.
He described the proposed complex as larger than the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, describing it as a clear statement of the APC’s ambition and political strength in Ebonyi.
“The size and capacity of this complex are even bigger than the national secretariat. It shows our determination to remain the leading political party in Ebonyi State,” he said.
Assessing the political landscape, Emegha claimed that the APC currently controls all elective and appointive positions in the state, across local, state, and federal levels.
He stated that all 171 ward councillors, 13 local government chairmen, 24 members of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, the six members of the National Assembly, and the three senators from the state are all APC members, describing Ebonyi as the strongest APC state in the South-East.
The party chairman also announced the defection of the last opposition federal lawmaker in the state, Hon. Iduma Igariwey, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
Igariwey, who represents Afikpo and Edda Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has reportedly completed his registration in his home ward.
“If I present the register here, you will see his name clearly written in Itim 001 Ward, his ward of origin,” Emegha said while displaying what he claimed was the membership register.
With this development, Emegha declared that the APC is now unrivalled in Ebonyi State and fully prepared for the upcoming local government elections.
