The Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Umaru Radda, has pushed back against claims that Nigerian governors are inherently corrupt, arguing that corruption in the country goes far beyond those occupying governorship positions.
Radda made the remarks during an interview with Radio France Internationale (RFI), later shared on Facebook, where he challenged what he described as sweeping and unfair accusations against state governors.
According to the governor, many individuals who have never served as governors have also been implicated in the looting of massive public funds, stressing that corruption cannot be narrowly attributed to one group.
Questioning the moral standing of some critics, Radda suggested that not everyone is qualified to pass judgement on others.
“Are governors the only thieves in Nigeria?” he asked, adding, “How many people have been caught with stolen money that does not even amount to half of what a governor legitimately earns?”
The Katsina governor cautioned against insults and blanket accusations, noting that leadership should be approached with seriousness and responsibility.
He emphasised that leaders who fail to account for their stewardship to the people would ultimately be held accountable before God.
“Leadership is a trust. Even if you escape judgement from the people, you cannot escape judgement from God,” Radda said.
He further stated that the true measure of governance lies in ensuring that public resources are transparently deployed for the benefit of citizens.
Speaking on security challenges facing the country, the governor stressed that peace can only be achieved through collective action. He called on Nigerians to work together, noting that lasting security requires the combined efforts of both government and the populace.
