Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has stated that he possesses the credentials and experience necessary to aspire to Nigeria’s presidency, a remark that comes amid rising discussions about his possible political plans ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speculation surrounding Makinde’s future ambitions intensified after campaign-style posters featuring his image surfaced in parts of Jigawa State. The appearance of the materials sparked conversations about whether the governor might eventually enter the race for the country’s highest office.
Addressing journalists during a media session in Ibadan, Makinde responded to the growing public interest in his political future and his eligibility to run for president.
The governor emphasized that his background in governance and business management provides him with the capacity to serve at the national level.
According to him, leadership experience at the state level is often a significant stepping stone for national leadership.
Makinde pointed out that by the time the next presidential election takes place in 2027, he will have completed two full terms as governor of Oyo State.
He explained that his political trajectory mirrors that of other leaders who previously governed states before seeking higher office.
In drawing a comparison, Makinde referenced the path taken by President Bola Tinubu, who served two terms as governor of Lagos State before later becoming Nigeria’s president.
Beyond his political career, the governor also highlighted his private sector background.
He explained that he began managing a company at a relatively young age, an experience that helped shape his administrative and leadership abilities.
According to Makinde, such exposure to both business and governance has prepared him for more complex national responsibilities.
While discussing the possibility of future political contests, the governor made it clear that he does not intend to support President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
Makinde also addressed comments attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, regarding political alignments ahead of the next presidential race.
He insisted that no individual has the authority to determine the political choices of others within the democratic space.
During the briefing, Makinde recalled attending a meeting that included President Tinubu, Wike, and several other political figures.
According to the governor, he was surprised when Wike allegedly suggested that he could position the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to support President Tinubu in the next election.
Makinde said he strongly disagreed with the idea, stressing that such a move would undermine the independence of the opposition party.
He maintained that while political actors are free to choose their alliances, those decisions should remain personal rather than imposed.
The governor further explained that his refusal to back Tinubu’s potential second-term bid is rooted in his belief that Nigeria’s democracy requires a strong and functional opposition.
Makinde warned that weakening opposition parties could gradually push the country toward a political environment dominated by a single party.
He also clarified that President Tinubu himself did not request that Wike take such a step.
According to Makinde, the suggestion was reportedly made voluntarily by the FCT minister.
Reiterating his stance, the governor stated that Wike is free to support any candidate he prefers in 2027, but he personally would not join such an arrangement.
Commentary and Analysis
Governor Seyi Makinde’s remarks highlight the growing political conversations surrounding Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
Although the election is still some years away, discussions about potential candidates and alliances have already begun to shape the country’s political landscape.
Makinde’s emphasis on governance experience and private sector leadership reflects a broader trend in Nigerian politics, where state-level leadership often serves as a platform for national ambition.
His decision to distance himself from President Tinubu’s potential re-election campaign also signals possible shifts in alliances within the opposition camp.
As political parties begin repositioning ahead of the next election cycle, debates over leadership, party unity, and democratic balance are likely to intensify.
