The All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South Group has accused Rivers State lawmakers loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of orchestrating an impeachment threat against Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The group claims the move is a retaliatory measure for Fubara’s refusal to include fictitious projects in the proposed 2026 state budget.
Rejection of Fictitious Projects Sparks Retaliation
Freedom Amadi, coordinator of the APC South-South Group, explained that the impeachment attempt is not linked to any violation of the peace accord brokered by President Bola Tinubu. Instead, it is a targeted effort to pressure the governor into inflating the budget with dubious line items.
Amadi stated:
“Governor Fubara did not violate the President’s peace accord; he simply refused to include fictitious projects in the state budget, and now that decision is being weaponized against him.”
He added that legislators claiming immunity from presidential influence are demonstrating institutional insubordination, undermining both constitutional processes and Nigeria’s democratic stability.
Alleged Coordination with Wike
The APC South-South also suggested that the impeachment drive is being coordinated with Minister Wike. Amadi noted Wike’s silence despite his federal appointment, questioning his commitment to the Tinubu-brokered peace. He warned that using impeachment as a political tool damages public confidence in governance and legislative credibility.
“It is clear that the impeachment threats are driven by Minister Wike’s influence. Lawmakers pushing this agenda are his loyalists, acting to maintain control over Rivers politics through legislative intimidation,” Amadi emphasized.
Call for Legislative Restraint
The group urged the Rivers State House of Assembly to immediately halt all impeachment proceedings and requested the National Assembly to intervene, describing the move as an overreach that threatens democracy.
“Legislative impunity in one state threatens democratic order nationwide. Rivers State does not belong to any individual or faction, and its budget is not a private ledger for political godfathers,” Amadi declared.
The APC South-South framed the situation as a conflict between political loyalty and fiscal responsibility, defending Governor Fubara’s decision to prioritize transparency over partisan pressure. The group reiterated that impeachment should serve accountability purposes, not retaliation.
Analysis
Political observers note that this development underscores the fragile balance of power in Rivers State. With Governor Fubara resisting undue pressure from powerful factions and Wike’s loyalists leveraging legislative authority, the impeachment controversy risks deepening political divisions. Analysts suggest that resolution will require careful adherence to legal frameworks and a neutral stance from federal authorities to prevent further destabilization.
