The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has set up a high-level committee tasked with engaging influential opposition figures nationwide as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections. The move signals the party’s ambition to unify key opposition actors without centering on any single individual or political party.
A source within the party, who requested anonymity, revealed that these engagements aim to ensure broad-based collaboration, particularly with leaders willing to join a national opposition coalition. Among those in focus is the former New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Kwankwaso recently indicated his openness to alliances that might offer him top-tier political roles, though no formal commitments have been made.
Last weekend in Kano, Kwankwaso addressed his supporters, stating he would consider partnerships that could provide either a presidential or vice-presidential opportunity, while also responding to rumors about potential alignments involving Abba Yusuf. Despite this, ADC insiders have clarified that the party will not promise him either ticket.
A senior ADC official explained: “Our engagement is meant to facilitate proper dialogue across party ranks. We are keeping an open conversation with all relevant actors, not focusing on a single party or individual.” Another insider added, “Neither the presidency nor vice-presidency will be guaranteed to anyone at this stage.”
Under the leadership of David Mark as National Chairman and former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary, the ADC has emerged as the main opposition platform since July 2025. High-profile leaders, including former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, have all aligned with the party.
Rather than offering ticket guarantees, the ADC is reportedly considering an inclusive approach, providing strategic appointments and leadership roles within government as incentives for potential allies like Kwankwaso. Proposed positions include ministerial roles, National Assembly leadership slots, and the office of Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
An insider elaborated, “The party is focused on integrating all stakeholders fairly. While Kwankwaso won’t receive a presidential or vice-presidential ticket, discussions are ongoing to identify suitable alternative positions that benefit both him and the party’s strategic objectives.”
ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi declined to comment directly on the committee but reiterated the party’s commitment to growing its membership and expanding influence against the ruling APC. Similarly, NNPP Publicity Secretary Oladipo Johnson confirmed that Kwankwaso is in consultation with multiple political groups, without specifically naming the ADC.
Commentary & Analysis
The ADC’s structured outreach highlights a shift in Nigerian opposition politics toward coalition-building rather than personality-driven alliances. By engaging leaders like Kwankwaso while refraining from promising tickets, the party is balancing inclusion with strategic realism.
This approach could strengthen the opposition bloc ahead of 2027, particularly in states like Kano, where political clout is critical. Moreover, emphasizing alternative appointments over guaranteed tickets may prevent internal disputes while still attracting influential figures to the ADC platform.
The committee’s discreet operations indicate careful political navigation, suggesting the ADC intends to consolidate its position as a credible opposition force without creating unrealistic expectations among potential allies.
