Minister of Works, David Umahi, has dismissed suggestions that Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi could unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, insisting that the former Anambra State governor does not represent a political threat.
The former Ebonyi State governor expressed confidence that the ruling camp remains firmly positioned ahead of the next general election, maintaining that there is no fear over Peter Obi’s political influence.
Umahi Questions Obi’s Electoral Strength
During an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, David Umahi argued that Peter Obi’s style of politics has failed to convince him, describing it as driven more by perception than practical governance.
He maintained that even without the backing of President Bola Tinubu, he would still be capable of defeating Peter Obi in a political contest, emphasizing his belief that the opposition figure lacks the electoral strength to challenge the ruling party.
Minister Criticises Obi’s Record as Governor
The Minister of Works also revisited Peter Obi’s tenure as governor of Anambra State, alleging that his administration fell short in several critical sectors.
According to Nigeria political report sourced by Gossip News Now, Umahi claimed that major areas such as road infrastructure, healthcare and airport development did not receive the level of attention expected during Obi’s time in office.
He further alleged that funds were placed in financial institutions while contractors were still owed, adding that he was not impressed by the administration’s approach to governance.
Fresh Exchange Over Governance
The latest remarks come shortly after David Umahi accused Peter Obi of repeatedly questioning his integrity and public service record.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Akwanga–Jos Superhighway project, the minister argued that the former governor lacks sufficient understanding of governance and infrastructure management.
He also criticised Peter Obi for allegedly highlighting damaged sections of federal roads on social media, claiming the posts were intended to gain political advantage rather than encourage constructive engagement.
Umahi Invites Obi to Public Debate
As part of his response, David Umahi challenged Peter Obi to a public debate on governance and infrastructure development.
The minister indicated that such a discussion would allow Nigerians to compare their records in public office and evaluate their respective contributions to national development.
His comments add to the growing exchange of political criticism between leading figures as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 general elections.
Political Temperature Rises Ahead of 2027
Although the next presidential election is still some time away, statements from key political actors continue to shape the national conversation.
Supporters of both the ruling party and opposition parties have increasingly defended their preferred candidates, with issues surrounding governance, infrastructure and economic performance expected to remain central topics in the months ahead.
Commentary and Analysis
The latest comments from David Umahi reflect the intensifying political rhetoric already emerging ahead of the 2027 presidential election. As political leaders seek to strengthen their positions, comparisons of past records and governance performance are becoming a recurring feature of public debate.
While Umahi expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s electoral prospects, the eventual outcome of the election will depend on campaign strategies, voter sentiment and the political landscape closer to polling day. For now, exchanges between prominent figures such as David Umahi and Peter Obi are likely to continue attracting significant public attention.
